Description
Long Exposure Photography Workshop - Night Shoot
Join me in this evening Long Exposure Photography workshop, where we will shoot Kenilworth Castle ruins against the night sky.
Kenilworth Castle, formerly one of the strongest fortifications in the country, was reinvented in the Elizabethan era by Robert Dudley as an impressive palace for his queen. Initially built in the 1120s by Geoffrey de Clinton, the Norman keep served as a basis for the structure, and King John later added an external stone wall, as well as a reservoir, to the complex.During the lengthy twelve-month siege of 1266, the castle withstood the military efforts of Simon de Montfort. In the fourteenth century, John of Gaunt extended the castle's scale with a large great hall and personal lodgings. Numerous Lancastrian monarchs of the era made use of the castle, with Henry V constructing a secluded retreat by the lake.
Eventually, in 1563, Elizabeth I gave Kenilworth to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and with his support, the castle was fully transformed into a splendid palace. Elizabeth's royal visit for a week-long celebration in 1575 cemented Kenilworth's reputation, but after the English Civil War, the stronghold's fortifications were taken down.
It was not until Walter Scott's Kenilworth, a novel recounting the love story of Robert Dudley, his wife Amy Robsart, and Elizabeth I, that the castle gained the attention it retains to this day.
This is a good chance to learn and practise using the exposure triangle to balance ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture to create the desired effects in this long exposure photography event.
Shooting at night presents challenges and opportunities as we learn to see how light and dark tones contrast and how long exposure times can create dynamic pictures.
In this long exposure photography workshop, Alan will guide you through:
focusing in low light
tonal range and shadow and highlight recognition
composition and designing the shot in the dark
long exposure photography, set-up and calculating the right amount of time
